Research Research

The scientific production of the Federal University of Pernambuco is considered one of the best in Brazil.

In line with new trends, UFPE has been establishing partnerships, integrating research with teaching and seeking resources from funding agencies with the aim of generating knowledge and using the results of research developed in society.

As an active research university, UFPE has almost 600 research groups. The development of research was reinforced with the implementation of a new policy of public calls, which is even more transparent and democratic.

In recent years, UFPE's scientific production has gained more prominence thanks to the investments made to approve projects, mainly with the Studies and Projects Financing Agency (Finep/Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation) and the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes/Ministry of Education), through specific calls to support infrastructure and equipment acquisition. 

In this area, we highlight the CAPES-Print project.The CAPES-PrInt is a program to foster the internationalization of academic programs financed by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) of the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC). The program focuses on the graduate departments and finances work missions abroad, project maintenance aids, scholarships abroad (Sandwich Doctorate, Junior and Senior Visiting Professor and Training in short courses), in addition to scholarships in Brazil (Young Talent, Visiting Professor and Post-Doctorate).  These are the objectives of the initiative:

  • To promote the construction, implementation and consolidation of strategic internationalization plans for the selected institutions in the areas of knowledge prioritized by them; 
  • To stimulate the formation of international research networks aiming to improve the quality of academic production linked to postgraduate studies; 
  • To expand actions to support internationalization in postgraduate studies at the selected institutions;
  • To promote the incoming and outgoing mobility of professors and students, with an emphasis on doctoral students, post-doctoral students and professors linked to stricto sensu postgraduate programs with international cooperation activities; 
  • To foster the transformation of participating institutions into international environments; and 
  • To integrate other CAPES promotion actions into the internationalization effort.

The MEC launched a public call in 2017 and UFPE and 35 additional HEIs were selected (among 101 applications) to take part in the first edition of CAPES Print.

We can also highlight our Scientific Initiation Program. This initiative consists of a research modality in which undergraduate and high school students are initiated into scientific practice and encouraged to participate in research projects developed at the University, under the guidance of a professor, as volunteers or as scholarship holders - through supports offered mainly by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes/Ministry of Education). Through the Scientific Initiation the student has the opportunity to expand his knowledge and obtain a more complete training, preparing for teaching and for postgraduate activities.
